Wrong Place Wrong Time

For Ken Sartori last weekends meeting at Coates Hire Bunbury Speedway it was a case of being in the wrong spot at the wrong time.

Sartori and the team are still in a transient stage with their new Maxim Chassis, so another night of racing was only going to help them understand their new car. Things were positive but sometimes outside influences can undermine all the good work.

The Philmac/Cowara Contractors #41 started the night out looking a treat, and began the night well with a respectable time trial effort and then an excellent run through traffic to just finish second in his opening heat.

From that point on things got a little pear shaped.

At the opening corner of his second heat it all came to a halt as another driver caused some contact that had Sartori rolling over the black and red #41, causing enough damage to the car that it would result in a DNF against his name for that heat.

The crew put in a big effort to replace the components needed to make sure Sartori and the car were ready to return for the A-Main and did a fantastic job doing it. After a couple of practice laps he was ready to start, but the crash and loss of points meant that Sartori would have a battle on his hands coming from near the rear of the quality field on hand. He attacked the big Bunbury clay way with gusto, and started making his way through the field and gaining a number of places. Having moved up to seventh position on a drying surface and looking like he would continue through the field another car spun, leaving Sartori with no option than to throw his car sideways to avoid a collision. It was time to try it all over again as he was sent rear of field for requiring another push start.

He battled valiantly with the few remaining laps he had left to pass a number of cars to finish in eleventh spot, the first time in more than three months that Sartori had finished outside the top ten.

Afterwards he was despondent with the result, but not the new car. “We came away with a lot of positives from tonight” he commented afterwards. “The car was really good, it’s a different car and we had a pretty good set up in it. The thing responded well all night and I was happy with the car but we got upside down in that heat race after getting in the back of a car that messed up in front of us. We didn’t need to do that.”

“Not long after we restarted after the spin I had used all the tyres up and I was done. Things didn’t go our way tonight that’s for sure but we started off good, that opening heat the car was awesome. The accident where we got upside down in heat two was no fault of our own and the feature we got up there but for the spin we would have had a better result. All in all the cars pretty good and I’m feeling confident for next week.”

And that’s what he will need to be come next weekend when he takes on some of the best operators in the country and the USA for the final rounds of the World Series Sprintcars championship at Perth Motorplex over two nights, Friday the 5th and Saturday the 6th of February.
