| World Series To Finish On A High Out West Posted Tuesday, 2 February 2010 by Ken Brown |
| The twenty-third edition of Performance Wholesale World Series Sprintcars will conclude at the venue that is widely regarded as the best in the country. The Perth Motorplex will host the final rounds of the 2009-10 series on Friday February 5 and Saturday February 6. In previous years WSS has traditionally kicked off with the “Western Swing” before concluding on the other side of the continent. The very first round of WSS was actually held at the Claremont Speedway and won by local legend Alf Barbagallo after his teammate Shane Murphy crashed into a slower car while holding down a comfortable lead. The defunct Claremont circuit actually ran the opening round on four occasions with Kalgoorlie doing it nine times and Bunbury once. The high banked Kwinana circuit was also the scene of the opening round twice. The series has finished up in Brisbane and Parramatta on six occasions apiece, with Speedway City doing the honours five times and Warrnambool three. A total of 46 rounds have been held on the west coast – Claremont 14, Bunbury 13, Kalgoorlie 11 and the Perth Motorplex 8. And who has fared best on the various WA tracks I hear you ask. Multiple WSS race winners on the west coast circuits are as follows – Claremont – Garry Rush 3, Ron Krikke 2 Bunbury – Brooke Tatnell 2, Max Dumesny 2 Kalgoorlie – Brooke Tatnell 3 Perth Motorplex – Brooke Tatnell 4, Donny Schatz 2 Four different WA competitors have proudly stood on the top step of the WSS podium – Ron Krikke 2 wins (Claremont 2) Mark Wells 2 wins (Claremont 1, Bunbury 1) Ryan Farrell 1 win (Kalgoorlie 1) Alf Barbagallo 1 win (Claremont 1) Winners of the 46 WA rounds are listed below – Brooke Tatnell 10 (Claremont 1, Bunbury 2, Kalgoorlie 3, Perth Motorplex 4) Donny Schatz 5 (Claremont 1, Bunbury 1, Kalgoorlie 1, Perth Motorplex 2) Garry Rush 4 (Claremont 3, Bunbury 1) Max Dumesny 4 (Bunbury 2, Kalgoorlie 1, Perth Motorplex 1) Skip Jackson 3 (Claremont 2, Bunbury 1) Ron Krikke 2 (Claremont 2) Mark Wells 2 (Claremont 1, Bunbury 1) Brad Heywood 2 (Bunbury 1, Kalgoorlie 1) Garry Brazier 2 (Bunbury 1, Kalgoorlie 1) Randy Hannagan 2 (Claremont 1, Bunbury 1) Alf Barbagallo 1 Ryan Farrell 1 George Tatnell 1 Jack Hewitt 1 Andrew Scheuerle 1 David Anderson 1 Peter Murphy 1 Daryn Pittman 1 Kerry Madsen 1 Peter Lack 1 And who will be crowned the 2009-10 WSS Champion? Only seven drivers have taken out the previous 22 series. Brooke Tatnell and Max Dumesny have an amazing seven titles apiece on their racing resumes. Skip Jackson has three successes, the late George Tatnell has two, with singles going to Brad Heywood, Garry Brazier and American Daryn Pittman. |
