ANDREW Priolo is still one of the new kids on the block in sprintcar racing.

After growing up watching his father Pino race sprintcars and then having a successful Formula 500 career himself, Priolo took the bold step of going to 410 sprintcar racing last season.

Immediately he was noticed for the high level of presentation he took to the track every show.

Priolo showed some promise last year and has returned in 2016-17 to make serious inroads into the AHG Sprintcar Series competition.

On Saturday night, at the Magic Man 34 at the Perth Motorplex, Priolo did just that.

He finished second in the 34-lap feature race, behind Jason Kendrick, for his first sprintcar podium.

Priolo started the night with a seventh in qualifying and in the heat races claimed a seventh and an eighth.

He started 13th in the main event and drove well to stay out in the trouble unfolding in front of him, eyeing off third place in the latter stages.

This was until older brother David, who was leading, detonated his left rear tyre, elevating eventual winner Jason Kendrick to the lead and Andrew to second.

But he nearly didn’t make it.

“It was touch and go there, I was actually running out of fuel with three laps to go, that’s why I went to the bottom,” Priolo said.

“I remember David telling me he won a race last year and got it sideways just to try and get back to the (fuel) pick-up and it was dead after the finish line.

“I was actually asking on that restart if they were going to give us some fuel , I was in this sort of position last year at the state title and we didn’t have enough, thankfully we made it.”
