Gessner takes Speedweek opener

A COUPLE of years ago when quizzed on his thoughts about Quit Bunbury Speedway Cameron Gessner bluntly said the best bit was the road out of town.

He made those comments on the back of a disastrous season where everything that could go wrong in his Bunbury endeavours, did go wrong.

Maybe if we asked him again now the response could be somewhat different with Gessner winning both rounds of the AHG Sprintcar Series that have been held at the South-West venue this season.

The most recent win came on Monday night when he won the feature race from David Priolo and Jason Kendrick in the first round of the Wormall Civil USA v WA Sprintcar Speedweek that features Americans Brian Brown and Domenic Scelzi.

It was also round seven of the AHG Series.

Gessner was the star of the night, setting another Victory 1 Performance Quick Time – just like he did at the previous Bunbury round on November 19, when his 13.330-second lap was too good for Priolo’s 13.376 and Scelzi’s 13.417.

He then took a win and a sixth in the heat races, earning pole position for the final, alongside Jamie Maiolo.

Maiolo bolted away at the start and looked strong in the LJM Racing #99 before the field regrouped after four laps when Lee Redmond pulled up in pits bend.

Four laps later Maiolo was under pressure from Gessner who attacked and took the lead, shortly before Maiolo surrendered positions to both Priolo and Kendrick.

James Inglis headed infield with a fire in the W80 and then an open red light was called with 10 laps remaining after Brad Maiolo rolled on the back straight.

Maiolo’s crew thrashed to get the car ready and he managed to get pushed away after the race had started, albeit a lap down on the field.

Jamie Maiolo held on for fourth from Ben Ellement (started from P5), Brown (from P10), Mitchell Wormall (from P6), Scelzi (from P13), Danny Porter (from P11) and Scott Chatwin (from P12).

Both the Americans will be looking to make amends when round two is held at the Perth Motorplex on Tuesday night.

Scelzi looked promising in qualifying with a third, but then crashed out when something in the car broke in the first heat race.

Brown had to dig deep after being one of the slowest cars in qualifying.

Andrew Priolo withdrew from the meeting after pulling infield with chest pain in the first heat race.

Brodie Minchin also didn’t make the final after his car clipped the main straight fence, detonating the right rear tyre on the W22, with parts of the tyre going over the fence.

Chatwin was the only driver to play his Joker, doubling his feature race points for the night.
