Tatnell wins in Bunbury

BROOKE Tatnell won the combined AHG Sprintcars/World Series Sprintcars round at Quit Bunbury Speedway on Saturday night.

On a demanding track Tatnell started on the front row and led for the entire 30-lap journey, driving a calculated race that tested drivers who were forced to go either low or high in pits bend to avoid a challenging berm.

The former World Series and Australian champion crossed the line first in the Krikke Motorsport W2 ahead of James McFadden in the Monte Motorsport W17, also a former WSS and national champion, and Jamie Veal, who has a WSS championship to his name.

Steven Lines just missed out on a podium placing, finishing ahead of local boys Jamie Maiolo, Brad Maiolo, Trent Pigdon, Daniel Harding, Mitchell Wormall, Ben Ellement, Andrew Priolo and Jason Pryde.

Tatnell was the clear leader in the first half of the race that ran non-stop before Scott Chatwin went a bit high in pits bend to avoid the ruts and hit the fence hard, taking a chunk out of the concrete in the process.

Chatwin said he tried a different line to make the turn smoother, but ultimately paid the price.

Up until that point McFadden was third but was pushing Veal hard before eventually making a move that stuck.

On the restart Jason Kendrick was in the thick of things in the middle of the pack and passed one car before racing in close quarters with Trent Pigdon, when the two came together and Kendrick rolled in pits end, ending his night.

Deep into the race Tatnell got stuck behind Jason Pryde as he tried to put him down a lap, allowing McFadden to close the gap but Tatnell found a way through before another restart with five laps remaining.

The night ended prematurely for David Priolo who endured a series of violent flips as he came off the back straight, slamming in the pits bend fence hard, breaking the chassis behind his seat.

Priolo emerged unscathed, saying the throttle jammed on and he tried to wash as much speed off as he could when running second and right behind Lee Nash.

The start of the second heat was marred by an incident involving Cameron Gessner, Steven Lines and Kye Scroop as they raced into the first corner.

It didn’t look like much and Gessner went over gently with Scroop hitting the fence but it was enough to put the pair of them out for the rest of the show.

The sprintcars return to the Perth Motorplex next Friday and Saturday nights for the final two rounds of WSS and the third and second last rounds of the AHG championship.
